Pair of Grisaille Paintings

Spring & Summer

France, first half of the 18th century

Oil on canvas. Antique frames, carved wood, painted and gilded.

Height: 65 cm (25.6 inch)
Width: 50 cm (19.7 inch) Ref No: 814

Very decorative pair of two pendant oval grisaille paintings; one depicting four putti (cherubs) in a landscape holding flowers as an allegory for spring, the other with four putti in a landscape, harvesting and holding ears. Masterly painting technique gives the paintings an almost sculptural effect.

Grisaille is a term for a painting executed entirely in shades of grey (french ‘gris’), or of another neutral greyish color. It is particularly used in large decorative schemes to create the illusion of sculpture, especially relief.
