A Pair of Wall Scones

France, period of the Transition, circa 1770

Gilt Bronze

Height: 41 cm (16.1 inch)
Width: 36 cm (14.2 inch)
Depth: 23 cm (9.1 inch) Ref No: 1390

A beautiful and representative pair of gilt bronze wall sconces with three elaborately decorated branches.

The upswept and fluted candlearms are clasped with a scrolled foliate-cast. The drip-pans and nozzles are fluted. The tapering stem is decorated with finely chiseled acanthus leaves, which underline the overall elegance of the object. Very unusual and missing comparison is the finial, which is topped with a detailed and finely composed feather arrangement.
The pair of wall lights is an excellent addition to any sophisticated interior design and goes well with mirrors and cartel clocks.

The wall lights date from the French period "Transition", the time between Louis XV and Louis XVI. Stylistically this means in transition from rococo to neoclassicism, which is very noticeable in this pair of lights.

Very nice overall condition preserving the excellent original fire gilding.
